Overview ——

Touch ID is an innovative touch device designed to enhance the passenger experience at airports. Its main objective is to provide entertainment to people waiting in the lounge area before boarding their flight. This project, which is part of my final thesis at the Escuela Superior de Diseño de Murcia, seeks to transform the monotony of waiting at the airport into fun and interactive moments.

Nowadays, many of us travel by plane either for work or leisure. We tend to arrive early, which often means long waits before boarding our flight.

Brief ——

If we have ever missed our flight, we know how important it is to arrive at the airport in plenty of time to ensure that, despite the many inconveniences that may occur, we do not miss our flight again. This behavior can sometimes lead us to have to face long waits, and when our plane is delayed, these waits become endless.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recommends arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

Research ——

According to different sources, there are over 90 000 commercial flight every day, transporting millions of passengers to destinations all around the world. This means that many users are likely to face long waits. And as mentioned above, when the flight is also delayed, this time increases significantly.

At the airports, there are currently few solutions for these situations. The most common are to read a book, browse the surrounding stores, have a coffee or watch the reels on social media, and so on. This project consists of providing users with something more, offering a better level of entertainment while facing the wait, without having to worry about having to check the information screen every so often to find out how much time is left to board and at which gate that would be.

Inspiration ——

The shape of the Touch ID is inspired by military aircrafts, making it perfect for use in reserved areas of airports.

On the other hand, as far as technology is concerned, Touch ID is inspired by the most innovative products on the market, such as the interactive tables of the Inamo restaurant (London), which allow customers to choose their menu directly from their table, or Windows Surface multitouch screens as in the photos below.

Touch ID is an interactive table that allows you to make the wait at the airports more enjoyable and entertaining.

Outcome ——

Touch ID has been designed to improve the waiting experience at airports. With this table, you can play, watch series or movies, continue working on your cloud service, or order food that will be delivered directly to your table. Thanks to the electronic reader you can scan your ticket and the table will keep you updated about the status of your flight at all times. It will also notify you to start boarding and the correct gate, as well will keep you updated in case of any possible delay or modification that your flight may suffer. In addition, the table is equipped with two compartments with sensors that allow you to keep your hand luggage always monitored and protected. The table will also notify you when someone tries to move your luggage without your permission. Check below all available services.

Touchscreen Technology ——

Each Touch ID table is equipped with 2 multitouch capacitive technology screens. This table can be used by 2 users at the same time, seated on opposite sides of the table. Each touchscreen can be raised up to 60° of inclination above the horizontal surface of the table. The tilt of these screens can be easily adjusted with buttons (+/-), based on the need of each user. In addition, this table is equipped with removable sockets to charge your mobile devices at 12V and 220V.

CMF ——

Touch ID is built with a metal structure made of a 3000 aluminum alloy, which provides it with better mechanical characteristics. The upper part is made of curved tempered glass, which gives it durability and strength, although it should be mentioned that in this case its weight is quite high. An alternative to this curved external part is to make it in composite material such as carbon fiber, which allows excellent mechanical performance, a premium surface finishing and a much lower weight than a tempered glass.
